What are Subterranean Termites?
Subterranean termites are a subclass of termites that can invade your home and leave you with costly damage. They can live in very large colonies and travel to places with lots of wood and metal, most notably your home. They can weaken wood and even metal support structures. Subterranean termites are the most destructive insect pests in Texas and can cause major damage to your home before you even realize they’re there. Don’t know much about Subterranean termites? We’ve got you covered.
How Did I Get Termites?
These pests live in the soil beneath and around homes and often enter through wood that touches the ground or by constructing mud tubes from the ground to the wood they infest. Cracks in concrete walls and foundations made of hollow blocks are also paths these insects could take to infest a house.
How Serious Are Termites?
As the most common type of termite in Texas, subterranean termites cause billions of dollars in structural damage each year. They also eat books, other paper products, cellulose-based products, and a variety of other plant-based goods.
Some colonies have more than one egg-laying female, so subterranean termite nests can grow quickly and contain hundreds and sometimes thousands of members. Since the pests can often infest homes for years undetected, responding to early warning signs is key to preventing serious damage. The most commonly observed warning signs are the presence of winged swarmers, mud tubes and evidence of damaged wood.
When are They Most Active?
Termites swarm in the warm days following rain and are also attracted to warm buildings in the winter. The spring is an especially active time for termites because it is when they mate and form new colonies.
How Quickly Can They Do Damage?
It takes 2-3 years for a termite colony to become large enough to swarm, but once they do, it takes an average sized colony only six months to eat through one foot of a 2×4. This may not sound like much, but they make tunnels in the surrounding wood, weakening the wood and potentially the structure of your house. It is important to tackle termite damage as soon as you suspect it!
How Do I Get Rid Of Termites?
Based on the layout of your home and the degree of termite infestation, our team will create a treatment plan tailored for your home to get rid of termites.
How Can I Prevent Termite Damage?
- Store all firewood away from the home.
- Make sure four inches of the foundation is showing and no mulch is touching the home. Siding should not extend down into the soil.
- Keep drainage systems unblocked and routing water away from the home to prevent buildup.
- Eliminate leaks and moisture from the home in general.

How to Get Rid of Backyard Bugs
Warm weather means the start barbecues, picnics, outdoor games, and plenty of time spent in your backyard. But it can also mean an invasion from less welcome signs of summer: bugs. Whether your backyard is facing a ants, flies, bees, mosquitoes, or ticks, you can find a keep those backyard bugs at bay.
The following five pest control tips may come in handy as you try to keep the backyard bugs at bay this spring and summer:
1. Remove Areas of Standing Water
Standing water is the enemy in your battle against backyard bugs, as it’s the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Make sure your gutters are unclogged and that any sunken areas in your yard are filled in so that water can’t collect. Even the water in the birdbath and kiddie pool should be regularly changed to prevent those little suckers from multiplying.
2. Pick up Clutter and Debris
Items like toys, tires and half-used bags of potting soil make perfect containers for rainwater. Additionally, piles of leaves, fallen branches and rotting fruit can attract insects to your yard, as they provide food and shelter for many insects. Your efforts can help in insect control, so keep your yard free of this clutter to make the area a little less attractive to bugs.
3. Keep Lawns Tidy and Trimmed
Overgrown brush and weeds can provide great habitats and hiding areas for a slew of backyard bugs. Keep your landscaping tidy, and be sure to trim back tall grass, brush, and weeds around your property.
4. Store Firewood Properly
Do you have firewood leftover from the winter? Well, if you’re not storing it properly you could find yourself the proprietor of an insect hotel. Firewood provides food and shelter for many insects, so you need to be certain that you’re doing everything you can to try to prevent an infestation. First, make sure wood is dry before storing it. Then, keep it stacked above the ground on a rack or platform so that pests which live in the soil — like ants and termites — can’t easily access the wood. Additionally, keep piles of firewood stored away from your home or other buildings. Ideally, there should be 3 feet between a stack of firewood and any structure. Lastly, firewood with a top cover or roof over it will remain drier and last longer. Do not fully wrap firewood piles with a tarp or plastic sheeting – this will trap moisture and make things worse.
5. Invest in a Professional Pest Control Service
Can you buy insect spray for lawns? Absolutely, you can. However, it likely won’t be as effective as the treatment a pest control specialist would use. In addition, a trained specialist may be better able to spot any potential pest problems before they get out of hand. The specialist can then make recommendations customized for your situation.
With a few preventative measures, you can attempt to keep backyard bugs at bay this spring and summer. Want some backup from trusted pest control specialists? Contact Dynasty Pest Control to schedule your initial inspection.

Winter Pest Control Tips
As winter quickly approaches, it’s time to tighten and tidy things up around your home. Regularly and thoroughly inspect your home for holes, gaps or any other type of openings on your property.
Inspect Inside Your Home
Look behind furniture, in the cabinets, closets, corners or anywhere else that potential pests many enter from. Also check around windows, doors and any screens. If you find a hole or opening, be sure to seal it with caulk or another protective sealant as soon as possible, no matter the size of the opening. You’d be surprised how easily a tiny mouse could fit through an opening the size of your pinky finger.
Check Outside Your Home
If you have a big yard with some wood and leaf piles, you need to pay extra attention to these winter pest control tips. We understand that in the winter it’s nice to have a cozy fire in the backyard. But that firewood could be attracting pests to your home. Be sure to keep at least a 20-foot distance between the piles of wood or leaves from your home.
Wood and leaf piles are a magnet for pests because they’re warm, moist shelters for pests in the winter. The closer the piles of wood are to your house, the closer the pests are; The closer the pests are to your home, the higher chance they’ll find a way in.
If you have a chimney, don’t bring the firewood into your home until you’re ready to burn it. Tons of bugs are found in firewood and when the firewood in your home, you could be bringing along pests with it.
Remove All Clutter
That dusty couch sitting in the basement, those boxes of old magazines and books in the attic, the mess you’ve been saying you’ll “get to” in the garage – it all has to go. Before the weather gets too cold, it’s important you go through your entire home (garage, sheds, yard, attic, and basement included) and remove all clutter.
Winter pests like mice, spiders, and other insects like to make themselves at home wherever they find clutter. Be sure to handle this in a timely manner.
Beware of Moisture
Water is essential for life, so you know that pests will be looking for water anywhere they can find it this winter. Inspect your home for any leaks, especially in bathrooms, attics, and basements. If moisture isn’t dealt with in a timely manner, it could attract various pests to your home. This could even cause potential property damage.
Overall cleanliness of your home and yard is important to defend against pests this winter. Here are a few last-minute winter pest control tips to remember:
• Check for any holes or openings.
• Keep your counters and floors clean.
